Paint Defects with Vision Systems

From craters, encrustation to impurities and drops…

Not all the Paint Defects have the same characteristics and that is where the importance of properly classifying them and their complexity lies. Not all defects are treated in the same way and eliminating them from the beginning can, indeed, resolve future problems. Paint defects at the time of manufacturing are completely normal. Can occur from internal sources such as workflows or external sources such as dirt. Treating and normalizing day-to-day challenges means eradicating the problem from an objective and decisive point of view.

Let’s start from the beginning

In this blog we want to tell you about these typical defects and how they are detected through Vision Systems. Also, the advantages of classifying them with Artificial Intelligence.

As we have mentioned previously, the most common defects that Automotive Plants face are concave defects. Incrustations, impurities and planes or goosebumps are some of them. We can also have defects that are completely convex, such as pores, craters and drops.

Vision Systems clue

The clue of Vision Systems reside in  reflecting light and generating many images as possible where you can later observe them. Through the speed of the car, its 3D representation, the number of images obtained and the frames per second you can know the location of the same imperfection through the different images. After an assessment and a comparison, it is determined and classified what type of defect is according to what is observed in the images.

What does this mean? Depending on how the light reflects on each of the imperfections and in each of the images, we will know if they are one type of defect or another. And consequently we will be able to classify the defect and determine what its respective solution may be.

The ”million-dollar question”

How does this type of solution benefit the plant? We will not talk about automation because that is something obvious. We will mention that the speed of work is much higher. Accustomed to wanting speed, short-term results and reducing day-to-day errors, Vision Systems are the perfect ally. They do not solve all day-to-day problems, but they do reduce them and help you skip phases in the production cycle. It is not necessary to invest a long time in the error detection phase because it already detects and classifies them. You only need to know in the next phase how to fix them.

Paint Defects resolution

To conclude, we would like to mention CDCarCaare which inspired some parts of this article. They mention the care that must be taken when fixing these defects to not harm the car. Also, about how the tipical defects and contamination are generally surface-level imperfections that can often be remedied with straightforward cleaning and decontamination techniques. In some cases, specialized chemicals may be necessary to dissolve tougher contaminants which can then be removed through gentle abrasion with clay media.

Aggresive Contaminants

However, certain aggressive contaminants, if left untreated for prolonged periods, can penetrate the surface and cause below surface defects. These defects require more intensive treatment. Typically through machine polishing or paint correction methods. Machine correction offers a consistent and efficient approach to permanently removing below surface defects.

Approchable solutions

It’s essential to approach defect removal with caution, starting with the least aggressive methods to preserve the integrity of the automotive surface. By carefully considering these factors and employing appropriate techniques, we can provide effective solutions for addressing paint defects in auto detailing.

So in conclusion, not only is important to resolve the different paint defects but also the detection of itselves. In our case, that was exactly the purpose of our Paint Quality Inspector. To make the job easier. In this way we will be able to approach to the state of art in the Automotive Industry.
